To Eat In Spain
I should say I used to be a picky eater, especially as a kid. My habits definitely improved after I started cooking more on my own. Traveling took it to a whole new level. I am still hesitant with spicy meals but certainly more open to discovering new foods. I had never had a problem with sweets J so trying new deserts is clearly my highlight of any trip!!
During our 2011 Spain trip, Vitaliy was way more adventurous when it came to trying Spanish foods. His favorites were Paellas (Spanish rice) and different kinds of jamon. I enjoyed having variety of tapas (tiny sandwiches). Some other foods took me by surprise. It was our first Europe trip so I did not really care about what we would eat when we were planning our trip. There was more to be excited about. Now, I took time to look what Spanish famous foods are and put a short list of what we would like to try in the next couple weeks.
- Tortilla de Papatas (Spanish omelet).
- Paellas-Spanish rice dish.
- Gazpacho-cold soup made with tomato, cucumber, onion, olive oil, garlic and bread.
- Cocido Madrilena stew.
- Migas-Spanish bread crumbs dish.
- Different kinds of jamon is on the list as well.
- And, of course, tapas.
Must try desserts include:
- Tarta De Santiago– moist almond cake.
- Tarta De Queso-Spanish cheesecake.
- Torrijas– cinnamon fried bread.
- Creama Catalana-crème brulee.
- Chocolate and Churros.
- Flan-gelatinous dessert.
- Hojuelas– fried pastry. Hojuelas means flake in Spanish.
We also put a list of some restaurants in cities we will be visiting. TripAdvisor has lots of reviews and pictures. It will be a stress reliever when all of a sudden everyone becomes hungry while occupied with exploring new places. It’s harder to make such “important decision” on an empty stomach ;), especially when it’s time for a 3 year old to eat.
Grocery shopping in a local market is absolutely a money saver. It is also a great way to try local foods. Mercadona, Lidl, Carrefour are popular chain supermarkets in Spain. I love open food markets. I could totally live on fresh fruits and vegetables and there is never a shortage of deserts ;). Guidebook has the information on where to find open markets as well as the supermarkets.
Well, with this yummy list completed it sounds like we are now all prepared for our Spanish adventure. Let it begin!
Hope, I did not make you hungry ;). What are you favorite Spanish foods? Please share and Thank you!
